Father's Day Celebration Ideas

Hispanic father pushing daughter on swing and making eye contact.There are several variations on the history of Father’s Day, but the general story goes that the idea started in 1909, when a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd in the state of Washington proposed a holiday to celebrate fathers, apparently inspired by Anna Jarvis who started the Mother’s Day holiday the year before.

Sonora wanted to honor her father, a veteran of the United States Civil War, who raised six children after he became a widow. Some sources say her father was born on June 5, and others say he was born on June 19, but either way, the holiday was established to be celebrated each year on the 3rd Sunday in June. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day be celebrated nationally, and in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the official proclamation for this national holiday. June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, so if you’re not already eating enough of these healthy foods, this month is a great time to start! The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that you eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fat-free or 1% milk and dairy products. These foods have the nutrients you need for health—including potassium, calcium, vitamin D, and fiber.

Furthermore, they recommend that you make half your plate at every meal consist of fruits and vegetables. Choose red, orange, and dark-green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables for your meals. Add fruit to meals as part of main or side dishes or as dessert.
