Employee Health and Fitness Month: Lunch Tips

GEHFMlogo_3bc07fGlobal Employee Health and Fitness Month (GEHFM) is an international and national observance of health and fitness in the workplace, created by two non-profit organizations, the National Association for Health & Fitness and ACTIVE Life. The goal of GEHFM is to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to employers and their employees through worksite health promotion activities and environments. Formerly National Employee Health & Fitness Day, Global Employee Health & Fitness Month has been extended to a month-long initiative in an effort to generate sustainability for a healthy lifestyle and initiate healthy activities on an ongoing basis.

work-lunchAt Salud de Paloma, we’d like to add the challenge of eating healthy in the work place! Here are five easy and inexpensive ideas for healthy lunches at work or while on the run:

  1. When you make dinner the night before, consider making extra portions so you can take as leftovers to work the next day. (We recommend buying glass containers with lids – microwaving in a plastic container is not recommended.)
  2. At the beginning of the week, chop up fruits and vegetables and store them in individual bags or containers so you can easily grab one in the morning to take with you as a snack. These go excellent with almonds, cashews, and pistachios (the healthiest nuts).
  3. Make a large batch of whole grains or legumes (such as brown or wild rice, or lentils and chickpeas) you can use throughout the week. They’re healthy, very filling, and they pair up nicely with a dinner leftover (especially if the leftover is very small, such as a tiny portion of steak – you can chop it up and use it as a topping.)
  4. If you go out eat with your co-workers avoid menu selections that have fried or starchy items – make sure you have plenty of fresh vegetables to go along with your protein (preferably lean).
  5. Eat a heathy breakfast before you go to work – a small bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit, or scrambled eggs with vegetables – so you’re not starving by lunch time and over eat. Plus, it will make you more productive in the morning!

And of course, our extra virgin olive oil makes a perfect condiment to any lunch or snack!
