Father's Day Celebration Ideas

Hispanic father pushing daughter on swing and making eye contact.There are several variations on the history of Father’s Day, but the general story goes that the idea started in 1909, when a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd in the state of Washington proposed a holiday to celebrate fathers, apparently inspired by Anna Jarvis who started the Mother’s Day holiday the year before.

Sonora wanted to honor her father, a veteran of the United States Civil War, who raised six children after he became a widow. Some sources say her father was born on June 5, and others say he was born on June 19, but either way, the holiday was established to be celebrated each year on the 3rd Sunday in June. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day be celebrated nationally, and in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the official proclamation for this national holiday.
